BEIJING (Reuters) – A strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit southwestern China's Sichuan province on Saturday, killing at least 56 people and injuring about 600 close to where a big quake killed almost 70,000 people in 2008.


The earthquake occurred at 8.02 a.m. (0002 GMT) in Lushan county near Ya'an city and the epicenter had a depth of 12 km (7.5 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.


The quake was felt by residents in neighboring provinces and in the provincial capital of Chengdu, causing many people to rush out of buildings, according to accounts on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo microblogging service.

CHENGDU, April 20 (Xinhua) — A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Lushan county of Ya'an city in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 8:02 a.m. Saturday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The epicenter, with a depth of 13 km, was monitored at 30.3 degrees north latitude and 103.0 degrees east longitude.

Hong Kong (CNN) — A strong earthquake struck the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan on Saturday, killing more than 40 people and injuring hundreds of others, authorities said.


As emergency workers rushed to reach the affected areas in the hilly region, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang ordered that all possible measures be taken to try to rescue victims of the quake, state media reported.


The death toll currently stands at 46, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported, citing Sichuan's emergency management office.
